It’s almost that time of year again, when we get to check out the latest developments in processing and packaging machinery at the PPMA Show 2012. Held at the NEC in Birmingham?on 25 – 27th September 2012, this year’s show will focus on automation, innovation, efficiency and technology

Hundreds of equipment manufacturers, whose products are used across the UK food & drink, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, household products and chemicals industries, will gather at the NEC on 25-27 September 2012 to demonstrate their wares to PPMA visitors.

This year’s exhibition will be built around the cornerstones of Automation, Innovation, Efficiency and Technology in order to deliver an  insight into solutions that maximise the productivity, consistency and quality of products and services in the processing and packaging industry.

The show will provide plenty of opportunity to learn more about these four key features, as well as do business and make new contacts. There will also be a series of panel debates discussing the issues challenging the industry. Under ‘The Manufacturing Forum’ banner, industry editors will lead lively lunchtime debates on pertinent issues affecting the industry today, including trends, sustainability and barriers to training and achievement.

Also returning to the show is the ‘Ones to Watch’ competition, sponsored by Festo Training & Consulting, which aims to identify the industry’s next generation of stars.?The talent has been narrowed down to three young professionals under the age of 35, with the opportunity to vote available via the PPMA website.

This year’s show will feature over 250 exhibitors including companies such as Chronos BTH, Endoline, Flexicon, Ishida, Pacepacker and Spiroflow, to name but a few.

The Chronos BTH stand (D70) will feature graphic and video displays to illustrate its product portfolio, which includes: bagging, process & bulk weighers; open-mouth & FFS bagging lines; robot, gantry, compact & high speed palletisers and stretch hood load securing technology. Members of the company’s Customer Care team will be on hand to discuss maintenance and spare parts requirements.

Ishida will use its presence at the PPMA show to debut the QX-775-Flex tray sealer. The sealer is said to combine a compact design with high speeds for MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packing) trays of up to 15 cycles per minute. In addition to the new tray-sealer, Ishida will show models from its CCW-R multihead weigher, DACS checkweigher, IX X-ray system and SPA Strip Pack Applicator ranges, along with its iTPS complete packing line solution for snacks. Visit stand C51.

On stand B20 at this year’s PPMA Show, Industrial Washing Machines (IWM) is focussing not only on the efficiency and low lifetime cost of its industrial washing and sanitisation systems, but also on their environmental credentials. The new entry-level SAN100e sanitising unit, which has been developed to  offer effective sanitisation at an attractive price, will be on display, as will the latest Edi13 ALTA twin tier utensil and weigh pan washer. According to IWM, this has become the first machine of its type to appear on the Government’s water technology list. Also on show is the Crusader T400 Twin Tank tray washer.

Pacepacker Services will showcase its award-winning tray packing, bagging and palletising solutions on stand C70. The FlexaPac system, which is suitable for netted fruits and vegetables, achieves a throughput of 60 packs per minute and eliminates waste.

Flexicon will give those looking to improve efficiencies in the handling and transference of powders, flakes and granules, an insight into its range of bulk handling equipment and systems. On stand F27, the company will introduce a number of bulk-bag delivery systems, and there will also be the opportunity to see filling systems and conveying technologies.

A new generation of Tray Erector will be on show on the Endoline Machinery stand (D30). The 511 Tray Erector is 30% more compact than the company’s current tray erector, and has an output speed of 1800 trays per hour.

Spiroflow design, manufacture, install and commission conveying, weighing, blending, bulk bag (FIBC) filling and discharge equipment and systems for dry bulk solids, ingredients and additives. You can view examples of this equipment on stand G16, and learn how Spiroflow can offer standard or customised solutions, backed by  high quality after sales support.

Difficult shapes, flat or transparent objects that have previously defied reliable detection can now be seen clearly using sensing solutions introduced by Sick UK on stand A50.

Sick has developed the MultiLine sensor to ensure a stable and continuous detection signal from the leading to the trailing edge of a product, even when surfaces are glossy, flat, or contoured, such as vacuum foil coffee packs, wrapped chocolate bar or soup sachets. The sensor’s design reduces the risk of machine downtime by eliminating false signals.

The Russell Finex stand (B21) will feature the company’s vibratory sieves and filters, including several working units to show how they can improve quality and reduce processing costs.

In addition to the exhibition itself, the PPMA Group Industry Awards, will take place on the first night of the show (25th September). Judging has now been completed and the finalists in each category have been announced. The gala dinner event will be held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. For more information visit:
